Electrical energy is the energy of electrons. Since opposite charges attract and like charges repel, electrons will try to move away from something that has a negative charge and toward something with a positive charge. That causes electrons to flow and if you put something in the path of the electrons, the object will heat up or glow as the electrons try to pass through.
