Tips For Success!

When the pieces of writing have been collected and marked (note: no comments are made on the published piece, only on the rubric), the teacher returns the piece and the rubrics to the student for comment. The piece, rubrics and comment are collected and added to the student's portfolio. Only works in progress are kept in the student's writing workshop folders. A copy of published pieces should be made available for class reading as well, to ensure that the students are recognized as authors.

Here are some tips you may wish to use in your classroom to ensure that your Writer's Workshop is a success!

  • Students respect others by recognizing that some authors need a quiet atmosphere when writing
  • The conferencing area should be in a place where it will not distract students.
  • Keep all writing drafts - nothing should be thrown out.
  • Make sure that the students are aware of the expectations of the assignment.
  • Students should be familiar with the rubric that will be used to evaluate their assignment
  • Students should be involved in setting the criteria for their assignment
  • Provide an opportunity for the students to share/display their work
